As a professional athlete who frequently travels for competitions, how do you manage the physical and mental demands of travel?
As a professional athlete, managing the physical and mental demands of travel is crucial for performance. I make sure to prioritize rest and recovery by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and eating nutritious meals. I often take meals from home with me to make sure to have high-quality meals during longer car drives or flights. I am always trying to make traveling easy and comfortable, trying to sleep and recover whenever it’s possible.
What challenges do you usually face when trying to get a restful night’s sleep while traveling?
One of the biggest challenges I face when trying to get a restful night’s sleep while traveling is the unfamiliar environment. The different noises, bedding, and temperature can all impact my ability to sleep well. I am very sensitive to noise, light and the quality of pillows and mattresses. Additionally, jet lag can disrupt my sleep patterns, making it difficult to adjust to a new time zone.
How do you prioritise sleep during your travel schedule, especially when dealing with different time zones?
Training or sporting activity helps me to control my sleep rhythm. When I am at home, I also try to sleep during the day between my sessions in order to have better recovery, that makes it actually much easier for me to adapt to different time zones. I also try to limit exposure to bright lights before bed and make sure my sleep environment is comfortable and conducive to rest.
What do you do to create a sleep-friendly environment in hotel rooms or unfamiliar settings?
Creating a sleep-friendly environment in hotel rooms or unfamiliar settings is important for ensuring a good night’s sleep. I bring along items that help me create a familiar and comfortable atmosphere, such as a travel pillow, earplugs, and an eye mask. I also try to control the room temperature and limit noise distractions as much as possible. As I am really sensitive to light, I sometimes tape all the windows in the hotel room with aluminium foil to darken the room.
Do you rely on any gadgets, apps, or tools to optimize your sleep and well-being while traveling?
Yes, I rely on the ErgoSportive™ App to optimize my sleep and well-being while traveling. It helps me track my sleep patterns and provides personalized recommendations for improving sleep quality. This app helps me monitor my sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and overall sleep health, allowing me to make adjustments to my routine as needed.
Are there any specific techniques or practices you use to help you relax and unwind after a long trip?
After a long trip, I make sure to prioritize relaxation and unwinding. One specific technique I use is the ErgoSportive™ Smart Bed, which offers adjustable features that help me find the most comfortable position for resting and recovering. I also incorporate activities such as stretching, light exercise, and taking a warm bath to relax my muscles and promote relaxation. Additionally, I practice mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing to help calm my mind and promote a sense of tranquility.
